General Relocation Tips
Construct a relocation checklist. Fill out a forwarding address form at the post office 30 days prior to your move. Inform family, friends, magazines, credit card companies, schools, professional service providers, etc. about your new address.
- Enroll your children in their new school ahead of time.
- Talk with your insurance agent about how your insurance needs may change.
- Close any non-transferable current bank accounts and establish new accounts at your new location. Withdraw enough cash to last you through settling into your new home.
- Arrange to cut-off your current utilities, and provide the companies with your forwarding address for final bills. Arrange to have the utilities at your new home connected.
- Discontinue any contracted services (such as lawn mowing, snow plowing, and newspaper delivery) and arrange for new services at your new address.
- Arrange to have the locks changed on your new home (when buying existing real estate).
- Gather all important records and plan to move these yourself. Medical records from doctors, dentists, optometrists, veterinarians, etc. (and transfer any prescriptions). Tax returns, school records and diplomas, legal documents and titles, birth certificates, passports, insurance documents, financial records, stock and bond certificates, family pictures and memorabilia, etc.
- Cancel or transfer social, athletic, civic, religious or business affiliations and memberships.
- Collect any items you have out for repair, cleaning, or storage.
- Keep careful records and receipts of all your moving expenses - many may be tax deductible.
