Grand Island, NY - Map. Located in western New York State (WNY), this 40 square mile Island is situated in the upper Niagara River between Lake Erie (City of Buffalo) and the mighty Niagara Falls (near the USA / Canadian border). Grand Island is one of the largest inhabited freshwater Islands in the world. Although it's larger than Manhattan (450 mi East) it is relatively unpopulated for its size - a mere 20,000 people (circa 2003).
Grand Island is virtually a "green", wooded suburb surrounded by 26 miles of navigable shoreline. It contains 2 State Parks, a beach & 18 hole golf course open to the public, as well as a private country club, and both public and private marinas.
It's run by a town government and has its own excellent school system, sports and recreation programs. The bridges to the "mainland" were not built until 1935 - and this pleasantly restricted the towns' growth compared to the surrounding, busy, crowded suburbs. The pre-bridge ferry boat days kept the population to a small community of farms and summer homes.
"The Island" as it's known by locals, has a most intriguing history which includes both ancient (Neutre) and modern (Seneca) Indian tribes, who used the Island for villages as well as burial mounds.
Grand Island was first mentioned in modern recorded history by the French missionary (Fr. Hennepin) and famed explorer (Joliet) in 1679. It played important roles on the French & Indian Wars and the War of 1812. In the 1880's & 90's it became "the" summer place for amusement parks, hotels and seasonal homes of the wealthy from Buffalo (then the 5th largest city in America).
This peaceful Island even had its role for "Rum Runners" during the U.S. Federal Prohibition Era - a natural locale since the West shoreline faces Canada (where alcohol remained legal & available) and the East shore towards the USA.
There were many dreams planned here, and they can be unlocked and examined at the Grand Island Historical Society located in one of the last of the old summerhomes "Riverlea" (often visited by President Grover Cleveland) inside Beaver Island State Park.
There are many areas to walk, enjoy nature, birdwatch and fish. The Town also includes an extensive system of bike paths - making a favorite recreation spot for many Western New Yorkers.
The crime rate is relatively low (this is not a good place to commit a crime – with escape path limited to 2 sets of bridges or a boat!) and there are 5 sets of law enforcement entities operating here: New York State Troopers, Erie County Sheriffs, State Park Police, Grand Island Town Police and US Border patrol.
Grand island homes range from older, moderately priced ($70,000 range) to magnificent waterfront estates and other custom built homes in wooded subdivisions, as well as existing homes with acreage (many with ponds and some with horse barns). The upper end in price would generally fall in the $1,000,000 range.
